How pairs are created and grouped in a padel tournament

Padel makes its own pairs from the player count, puts them in one group, and can redraw them for you.

You do not add teams to a padel tournament by name. You say how many players are coming, and Scoryboard makes the pairs.

Before you start

Save a padel format first. Setting one up is covered in "Choosing a format for a padel tournament".

Where the pairs come from

  1. Open the tournament and select Format. The Group Phase card holds every pair.

  2. Select Participants to see the same pairs as teams. Each one has two members.

Eight players make four pairs. Sixteen make eight. The names are placeholders - Player 1 & Player 2 and so on - and you rename them from Participants as your entries come in.

There is one group, not several. Padel puts every pair in Group A.

Redrawing the group

  1. Go back to Format. Two buttons sit above the group: Fill automatically and Clear.

  2. Select Clear to empty every slot. The group keeps its shape and the pairs come out of it.

  3. Select Fill automatically to deal the pairs back in.

  4. Choose how they should be paired up, then select Autofill.

What you will see

Three ways to draw the group:

  • Strongest players on the first court - your top players play on the main court.

  • Evenly matched teams - strong and developing players are mixed, so the matches are close.

  • Random - the current teams are spread across the available groups by chance.

If it does not work

  • There are no pairs at all. The format has not been saved. Open Format and set one up.

  • You want a different number of pairs. The pair count comes from the player count. Change it in Configuration - see "Changing a padel format after you have saved it".

  • Fill automatically does nothing. It opens a dialog. Choose a pairing logic, then select Autofill.

  • The group is empty after Clear. That is what Clear does. Use Fill automatically to deal the pairs back in.
