A match that is missing any detail sits on Incomplete. Your team's fixture list shows it with dashes and a Finish Setup button.
The statuses
Incomplete - something is missing. The match is not on anybody's calendar yet.
Scheduled - everything is filled in. The match starts by itself at kick-off.
Live - the match is being played.
Paused - half time, or the referee has stopped play.
Finished - the match is over. Nothing about it can be changed after this.
Cancelled - the match was called off. It leaves your calendar and your team's fixtures.
What a match needs
Seven things. A match stays Incomplete until every one of them is set:
a home team
an away team
a Leaderboard
a Location Club
a Date
a Duration
a Team size
The leaderboard is the one people miss. Nothing on the form says it is required, and a friendly needs one as much as a league match does.
Game type and the line-ups are not required. Game type starts on Friendly, and a match with nobody picked still goes Scheduled.
Finish a match off
Open your team and look under UPCOMING MATCHES. A match that is not finished shows dashes where the date, the time and the venue should be.
Select Finish Setup. You land on the match's details form.
Fill in everything that is empty.
Select Save changes. The form is replaced by the match's details.
Go back to your team. The card now carries the fixture and an Add to Calendar button.
What you will see
A Scheduled match starts itself. You do not have to be there. The match page says so above the teams.
An Incomplete match is invisible to everybody else. It is not on the calendar and nobody is notified about it until it is finished.
If it does not work
You filled everything in and it is still Incomplete. Check the leaderboard. It is the field most people leave alone.
You want to take the venue back off. You cannot. A venue and a leaderboard cannot be removed once they are on a match. Nothing on the match form takes a Scheduled match back to Incomplete.
You do not want the match at all. Cancel it. See "Editing or cancelling a match".
The match went Live on its own. Its date is in the past. A match whose kick-off has been and gone starts itself, and a Finished match cannot be changed.
