Refereeing a match - what you can and cannot do

As the match referee you run the clock and record what happens. You cannot change the match itself.

As the referee named on a match, you run it: you start the clock, pause it, record goals and cards, and end the match. You cannot change the match itself - not its date, its venue, its pitch, its note or its line-up.

Before you start

The match's Owner has to have named you as its referee. That is what gives you these controls, and the Owner does it one match at a time.

What the match page looks like for you

Open the match from your profile or from Schedule. Two things tell you the page has recognised you as its referee.

There are five tabs - MATCH DETAILS, FEED, FACTS, LINEUP and KEYS - and START MATCH beside them. There is no PAYMENT tab and no heading above the tabs.

The top of a match page. Five tabs read MATCH DETAILS, FEED, FACTS, LINEUP and KEYS. A white "START MATCH" button on the right is outlined in red.

Your name is also first in the match's detail row, before the leaderboard, the date and the venue.

A row of match details. "Rae" beside a referee icon is outlined in red, followed by KB 21 Sunday League, Sat, 5 Dec 2026, KB 21 Astro, 19:00, 5 VS 5 and 60 min.

If you see Match Preview (View Only) instead, you are not this match's referee.

Run the match

  1. Select START MATCH at kick-off. There is no confirmation, and a match cannot be un-started.

  2. The button becomes the clock. It counts down from the match duration.

The same five tabs, with a white pill on the right outlined in red. The pill shows a blue pause icon and the time 48:00.

  3. Select the clock to pause the match. Select it again to resume. The pause and play icons on the pill tell you which state you are in.

  4. Add goals with + and − under the score. The minus is greyed out at zero.

A rounded row under the score holding two score counters, each reading 0 with a pale grey minus button and a blue plus button. The whole row is outlined in red.

  5. Award a card or Player of the Match from the FEED panel. These three appear only once the match is under way.

Three blue outlined buttons in a row, outlined together in red: "Yellow Card" with a yellow square, "Red Card" with a red square, and "Player of Match" with a wreath icon.

  6. Pick the team, then the player, and select Save. The card goes into the feed and onto that player's record.

  7. Select END MATCH at full time. The button replaces the clock when the countdown reaches 00:00.

The same five tabs, with a white "END MATCH" button on the right outlined in red.

You can also write in the feed while the match is on. Select Comment to add a line of commentary.

What you cannot do

  • Change the match. The date, the venue, the pitch, the duration, the team size and both line-ups are the Owner's.

  • Set the match note. The note is the Owner's to write. See If it does not work below.

  • Cancel or delete the match. Ask the Owner.

  • See or request payments. Payments are between the teams and their own players.

If it does not work

  • Add Note leaves the note empty. The box opens and takes what you type, but the note stays as it was. Only the Owner and team Administrators can set it. Ask one of them - see Assigning a referee, and adding a banner or note.

  • END MATCH is not there yet. The clock has to reach 00:00 first. Until it does, the pill is what you get. See The match timer.

  • You forgot to end the match. Scoryboard ends it for you 24 hours after full time, at whatever the score says then. The details card counts that down as Match auto-ends in. See Recording a match that has already been played.

  • The match started on its own. A match starts itself when its kick-off time arrives, whether anybody pressed START MATCH or not.

  • The teams read "Add Away Team" or the venue reads "Location not set". Open Teams once and go back to the match. The page needs to have loaded your teams before it draws somebody else's.

  • A match you finished cannot be corrected. Nobody can reopen it, so check the score before you select END MATCH.
